I recently re-discovered this photograph (amid some others) on our two semi-ancient cellfones (yes, I still carry his as well as mine). This surely is one of the last photographs of him, taken Fathers Day weekend, mid-June 2009, at the annual Huck Finn Festival at the lovely Mojave Narrows county park, not far from our house.
Jim never much liked having his picture taken, and, as you can tell, always preferred to be on the other side of the camera. This was his pride-and-joy digital camera that he used whenever possible, even during his last two too-difficult years.
Today would have been, should have been, his 48th birthday. I spent about 90 minutes on a heartbreakingly beautiful late-winter day where his Earthly remains are memorialized.
I talked to him there; I talk to him everywhere. Since he traveled beyond the stars a year-and-a-half ago (almost), he has transcended his lifelong bodily limitations and is, I have no doubt, watching over us all.
This blog is being established to keep the conversation going about Jim Long of Victorville, who traveled beyond the stars on Sept. 24, 2009, at the age of 46. Award-winning creative writer, avid photographer, talented graphic artist, veteran journalist and dedicated teacher, he was loved and must be remembered.
